KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS…….

What Would Jesus Play?

While getting ready for church one Sunday, this conversation was heard between 2 brothers, Mike (3) and Matt (6).

Matt: Come on Mike, let’s play legos.

Mike: Nope, I don’t wanna.

Matt: Come on Mike, what would Jesus do? Jesus would play if I asked Him!

Mike: So…go play with Jesus then.

Ps Bill Eng will resign as Assistant Pastor with effect from Dec 31. He’ll embark on a ministry as an evangelist. We thank him for his period of ministry at Berean and bid God’s blessings upon him and his family as they obey God’s calling upon their lives. They will be based in Batu Pahat.

The church will give Ps Bill a farewell on 29/12 after the worship service.

CONGRATULATIONS to those who were water baptised on Nov 18. We also welcome you as new members of Berean!

Venue: Champion Badminton hall on Jln Omar, opposite the former bus station.

NOVEMBER 2001

 If Jesus Came Back Today...
(Author Unknown)

 If Jesus Came Back Today...

Would you have to change your clothes
Before you let Him in?
Or hide some magazines, and put
The Bible where they'd been?

Would you hide your worldly music
And put some hymn books out?
Could you let Jesus walk right in,
Or would you rush about?

And I wonder...if the Savior
Spent a day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing
The things you always do?

Would you go right on saying
The things you always say?
Or would life for you continue
As it does from day to day?

Would you take Jesus with you
Everywhere you go?
Or would you maybe change your
Plans for just a day or so?

Would you be glad to have Him
Meet your closest friends?
Or would you hope they stay away
Until His visit ends?

Would you be glad to have Him
Stay forever on and on?
Or would you sigh with great relief
When he at last was gone?

It might be interesting to know,
The things that you would do,
If Jesus came in person,
To spend some time with you.

OCTOBER 2001

MISSION TRIP REPORT by Pr Bill Eng

Lili, Alyssa, Choon Ann and myself went on a mission trip to Medan from Sept 12-17. We had a very fruitful trip! Every meeting seemed to be ordered of the Lord. The first night, at a town 2 hours from Medan, some 30-40 people were filled with the HS and many received healings. We spent some time fellowshipping & discussing church matters with several pastors the next morning. They want us to minister in their villages the next time we visit. During this visit, we exposed a "pastor" who is a con-artist. He had told the pastors he has a Hokkien congregation in Johor Baru, and knows some well-known M’sian & S'porean ministers. He was a bit surprised when he met us. We found out that he couldn't speak fluent Hokkien, & had given a false M'sian address & phone numbers to the pastors. A pastor's sister was almost raped by him that night. He had been going around preaching in churches, receiving offerings, and has raped several women. God had a purpose for us being there right at that moment.

At a village near beautiful Lake Toba, we had an open-air meeting. The pastors had decided to trust God by renting a tent for the meeting. We were told it had been raining non-stop for 2 weeks. Though there were rainclouds, we didn't see a single drop of rain when we arrived, until the very second we got into our departing vehicle! During that afternoon, Lili felt impressed by the HS to intercede for the meeting & against the spiritual powers over the village. The devil tried to cut off the electricity twice during the meeting, but immediately after each time the Christians prayed, the power came back! Many repented of their sins, were filled with the HS, & instantly healed. A pastor told us the crusade was "dahsyat" (awesome). We were later told that they have had many crusades with different people & teams in the past, but nothing like what has happened. It was a first time they witnessed such a powerful demonstration of the power of the Holy ' Spirit!! We thank God for giving us the privilege to be His chosen vessels.

During the final night, we ministered at a church that is situated in the middle of a hostile religious community. By this time, I was very tired and had a fever. At the beginning of the meeting, we heard rocks being thrown onto the church. God moved powerfully in the small church - after we prayed for the baptism of the HS, 2 ladies fell and manifested demons. We cast them out, & prayed for the sick & the villagers crowded around the windows and the entrance of the house-church to see what was going on. We doubt if they'd throw any more rocks at the church.

There were probably about 100 people filled with the HS during the week. Alyssa helped to pray for the people. We saw her trying to read the song lyrics & lifting her hands in worship to God. Choon Ann gave his testimony on how God had healed him of hepatitis B, and the song he sang "UrapanMu" became a hit with the churches!

Our friend & interpreter, John, travelled with us throughout the week. Only married for just 2 months, we prayed that he & his wife will have a baby next year as his wife has difficulty conceiving. ALL GLORY BE TO GOD!

SEPTEMBER 2001

Nipping Negative Reactions
(Author Unknown)

Have you noticed how easy it is to react in a negative manner when something negative happens in your life? Doubt may creep into your thoughts and cause you to question God and His Word.

Proverbs 17:22 (NIV) says "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."

Thomas Hearne was an adventurer who took an expedition to the mouth of the Coppermine River. He recorded that a few days after the journey was started, Indians stole most of the expedition's supplies.

What was the explorer's comment on the theft? Surely he must have been upset and distressed about so great a loss. Not so!

The optimistic Hearne wrote: "The weight of our baggage being so much lightened, our next day's journey was more swift and pleasant."

Remember, negative reactions only make a bad situation worse. Choose to look for the bright side of problems this week.

AUGUST 2001

I Must Help My Neighbors

(Author Unknown)

James Bender, in his book "How to Talk Well" (New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., 1994) relates the story of a farmer who grew award-winning corn.

Each year the farmer entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors.

"How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked.

"Why sir," said the farmer, "didn't you know?

The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn."

He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbor's corn also improves.

So it is in other dimensions:

Those who choose to be at peace must help their neighbors to be at peace.

Those who choose to live well must help others to live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches.

And those who choose to be happy
must help others to find happiness,
for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.

The lesson for each of us is this: If we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn.

"Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love." Ephesians 4:2 (TLB)

JULY 2001

TOO BUSY TO STUDY AND PRAY?
(By Sheila Gosney)

Does your schedule keep growing beyond control
Till you're just running around day after day?
And you know you need to, but you just can't see how
To take time to study and pray.

For you take kids to school five days a week
With appointments and deadlines to keep.
Then you have club activities and baseball practices
With barely enough time to sleep.

Most of the time, you feel like you are "running on empty"
Or on "fumes" from the last sermon you heard.
But the God who loves you wants to energize you each day
From the pages of His Holy Word.

And if you'd make time each day to seek Him and pray
He'd grant a peace when you're frazzled and sore.
For He wants you to grow in the midst of your busyness
And to hunger for Him even more.

So if your life is that hectic, you need to shift gears
And make time with Him a priority each day.
Then you'll be so blessed, convinced and refreshed
That you can't afford not to study and pray.

"I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto Thy ways. I will delight myself in Thy statutes; I will not forget Thy Word.

{Psalm 119:15-16}

JUNE 2001

 Don't Give Them Vinegar!

The preacher placed two identical jars on the table next to the pulpit. He quoted 1 Samuel 16:7 'The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

"These jars came from the same factory, were made of the same materials, and can hold the same amount. But they are different," he explained. Then he upset one and it oozed out honey. He turned over the other, and vinegar spilled out.

"When a jar is upset, whatever is in it comes out. Until the jars were upset, they looked alike. The difference was within, and could not be seen. When they were upset, their contents were revealed. Until we are upset we put on a good front. But when we are upset, we reveal our innermost thoughts and attitudes, for 'out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.'" (Luke 6:45)

What if someone tipped you over today??

What would flow out?? Would you reveal the "honey" of grace and patience, or the "vinegar" of anger and sarcasm?

"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." (1Peter 4:8)

Have a terrific day knowing that the one who upsets you may be just looking for some honey - Don't give them vinegar!

MAY 2001

HANDS

(A Mother’s Day message)

When a boy or girl thrusts his small hand in yours, it may be smeared with chocolate ice cream, or grimy from petting a dog, and there may be a wart under the right thumb and a bandage around the little finger.

But the most important thing about his hands is that they are the hands of the future. These are the hands that someday may hold a Bible or a revolver; play the church piano or spin a gambling wheel; gently dress a leper's wound, or tremble wretchedly uncontrolled by an alcoholic mind.

Right now, that hand is yours. It asks for help and guidance. It represents a full-fledged personality in miniature to be respected as a separate individual whose day-to-day growth into Christian adulthood is your responsibility.

Jest for Laughs

One church has solved the age-old problem of getting congregations to occupy the front pews. The first three rows - and only the first three rows - are equipped with padded foam-rubber cushions.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

  • Mission 1 : To bring people to Jesus Christ as members of God’s community,
  • Mission 2 : to disciple them into maturity,
  • Mission 3 : to equip them for ministry effectiveness both in the local community and in world mission.

 APRIL 2001

YOUR LIFE IS JESUS TO SOMEONE
YOUR LIFE is Jesus to someone,
though tattered and torn it may be.

Though often times weak and unstable,

you're all of God someone will see.

YOUR TONGUE is Jesus to someone.
That idle, insensitive word reflects to at least one searching heart an idle, insensitive Lord.

YOUR GOALS are Jesus to someone.
What you put first, they believe,

are the goals of God for the Christian.

Your life is all they receive.

YOUR FAITHFULNESS...

that's Jesus to someone.

Their judgment of how God is true,
rests unquestionably in the faithfulness
they see day by day in you.

YOUR LOVE is Jesus to someone --
that someone who is seeking to know

that Jesus will follow and guide and
befriend wherever in life they might go.

SO BEWARE lest others blaspheme God
by what you say or do,
for the only Jesus that someone may see
is the Jesus they see in you.

"A man's life is always more forcible than his speech. When men take stock of him they reckon his deeds as dollars and his words as pennies. If his life and doctrine disagree the mass of onlookers accept his practice and reject his preaching." - C.H. Spurgeon

"I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love" - Ephesians 4:1-2

Jest for Laughs

The adult Sunday school class was discussing formal and informal prayer, when one man remarked, "I do some of my best praying while I'm driving."

From the back of the room, in a quiet voice, the man's wife agreed, "I, too, do my best praying while you're driving."

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

  • Mission 1 : To bring people to Jesus Christ as members of God’s community,
  • Mission 2 : to disciple them into maturity,
  • Mission 3 : to equip them for ministry effectiveness both in the local community and in world mission.

March 2001 Bulletin

Who Packs Your Parachute?

Sometimes in the daily challenges of life, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, or thank you, or something else nice. Congratulate someone on something that has happened, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason at all.

Lt. Charles Plumb, a US Naval Academy graduate, was a jet fighter pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent 6 years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience.

One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, "You're Lt. Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!"

"How in the world did you know that?" asked Plumb. "I packed your parachute," the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude.

The man pumped his hand and said, "I guess the chute worked!" Plumb assured him, "It sure did. If your chute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today."

Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, "I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform - a Dixie cup hat, a bib in the back, and bell bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said good morning, how are you or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor."

Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn't know.

Now, Plumb asks his audience, "Who's packing your parachute?" Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day.

Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory-he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety.

His experience reminds us all to prepare ourselves to weather whatever storms lie ahead. As you go through this week, this month, this year... recognize people who pack your parachute!

Beware in your prayer, above everything, of limiting God, not only by unbelief, but by fancying that you know what He should do - Andrew Murray

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

  • Mission 1 : To bring people to Jesus Christ as members of God’s community,
  • Mission 2 : to disciple them into maturity,
  • Mission 3 : to equip them for ministry effectiveness both in the local community and in world mission.

February 2001 Bulletin

he theme for 2001 is based upon Christ’s two foremost commandments. In Luke

10:25-37, a lawyer wanted to put Jesus to the test. He asked the Master, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Having already discerned the motive behind the question, Christ answered this intellectual man by asking him a question – "What have you read in the Law?"

After the lawyer had answered the question correctly, Jesus pointed out his weakness – he had a swollen head, but a small heart. The lawyer was a religious person who met every stroke and whim of the letter. Yet there was something lacking – his relationship with the one true God was merely a robotic response. He failed to understand the motivation behind his relationship with the Lord.

Loving God wholeheartedly should result in strong relationships with people. The fruit of the Spirit is a by-product of a submitted relationship to the Holy Spirit, and this fruit is to be evident in our relationship with people around us. In the parable, a Samaritan ministered to the injured man. The former is symbolic of a Christian who may not be religious or spiritual in the watchful eye of the church, but knows how to love another person in a practical way.

Loving God should not make us more aloof or detached from people. Instead, we should

  • be more concerned about their needs and respond to them
  • be able to love the unloved
  • be able to relate with people who are different than us
  • have a passion to make a difference in our community through our love actions

As we venture into another year, we are challenged to not just know and love Him more. We also want to be similarly just as fervent in our relationship with people around us.

~Pastor Bill

January 2001 Bulletin

Love God wholeheartedly,

LovE People fervently

From the Pastor-in-charge’s desk . . .

Praise God for the past year and let us enter into the year of 2001 with faith and new challenges. For we have God who promised to be with us to bless us (Joshua 1:9). Our former Senior Pastor Teo Kwee Keng has been led by the Lord to take over the post as Executive Pastor of Glad Tidings Klang, and she is now our Interim Pastor and I have been appointed to be the Pastor-in-charge of Berean. I covert much of your prayers. Although there are changes in our church yet let us change for the better and for His purpose and calling (Rom 8:28).

The theme for 2001 is Love God Wholeheartedly and Love People Fervently (Mat 22:36-40). It is the commandment of our Lord Jesus Christ. I believe by the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to make it if we build our relationship right with God daily.

Now it is harvest time. Let us rise up to bring in the harvest and be fruitful Christians. Paul said for me to live is Christ and to die is gain (Phil 1:21).

December 2000 Bulletin

"One Solitary Life."

He was born in an obscure village,
the child of a peasant woman.
He grew up in another obscure village,
where he worked in a carpenter shop
until he was thirty.
Then for three years
he was an itinerant preacher.
He never set foot inside a big city.
He never traveled two hundred miles
from the place he was born.
He never wrote a book,
or held an office.
He did none of these things
that usually accompany greatness.

While he was still a young man,
the tide of popular opinion
turned against him.
His friends deserted him.
He was turned over to his enemies,
and went through the mockery of a trial.
He was nailed to a cross
between two thieves.
While he was dying,
his executioners gambled
for the only piece of property he had -
his coat.
When he was dead,
he was taken down
and laid in a borrowed grave.

Nineteen centuries have come and gone,
and today his is the central figure
for much of the human race.
All the armies that ever marched,
and all the navies that ever sailed,
and all the parliaments that ever sat,
and all the kings that ever reigned,
put together
have not affected the life of man
upon this earth as powerfully as this
"One Solitary Life."
